PURPOSES OF
THE PRACTICUM
Embracing the profound belief that everything in life unfolds for a reason and holds its own intrinsic purpose represents a philosophical perspective that profoundly influences one's approach to the myriad experiences encountered on life's intricate journey. This worldview implies an interconnectedness of events, circumstances, and challenges, intricately weaving together a narrative that extends beyond the immediate and often complex moments of our lives.
In the context of the SEA Teachers Program, this philosophical perspective converges with the program's inherent objectives, each contributing to the broader narrative of personal and professional development.
The program unfolds with distinct purposes, aiming to
-
enable student teachers to refine their teaching skills and pedagogy,
-
encourage the practice of English language skills,
-
foster a broader regional and global perspective, and
-
expose future educators to diverse teaching and learning situations, emphasizing the value of flexibility.

Interview with UKI International | August 14, 2023
As I grappled with self-doubt before embarking on this journey to Jakarta, Indonesia, I questioned the alignment of the program with my own purpose. However, despite these initial hesitations, I found clarity in recognizing the intrinsic value of the experience. Participating in the SEA Teachers Program has become a catalyst for self-improvement, allowing me to benchmark my teaching skills and pedagogy against those of peers and educators from other universities. This exchange of ideas and strategies has proven invaluable in shaping my approach to education.
Moreover, the program has served as a crucible for enhancing my English speaking skills, providing a platform to practice and refine language proficiency in an immersive environment. The exposure to diverse curricula and teaching methodologies has broadened my knowledge base, offering insights into the dynamic landscape of education beyond the confines of my familiar context.
In essence, this reflective journey underscores the transformative power of embracing the belief that each experience, no matter how uncertain at its onset, unfolds for a reason. The SEA Teachers Program, with its diverse objectives, has become a conduit for personal and professional growth, reaffirming the interconnectedness of life's diverse experiences and the intrinsic purpose that guides each unique journey.

PROCEDURES
OF THE PRACTICUM

The practicum, spanning a duration of twenty-seven (27) days, has unfolded as a transformative period, but reflecting a year's worth of experiences within the educational landscape. Following my official endorsement by Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI) to Sekolah Harapan Prestasi (SHP), I promptly commenced my orientation and observation phase.
UKi International endorses me to Sekolah Harapan Prestasi | November 20, 2023
During this initial stage, my focus was on immersing myself in the school environment and gaining insights into effective teaching practices. I dedicated time to observing not only my assigned cooperating teacher but also other educators within the school. This multifaceted observation allowed me to glean diverse teaching strategies and techniques employed by seasoned professionals, contributing significantly to my pedagogical repertoire.
Subsequent to the observation phase, I transitioned into the planning and preparation stage. Crafting short-term plans and presentations became paramount as I geared up to undertake teaching responsibilities for both seventh and eighth-grade classes. This meticulous preparation was guided by the invaluable insights gained during my observations and aimed at ensuring a meaningful and impactful learning experience for the students.

In a collaborative spirit, I also engaged in an assistantship role, providing support and assistance to fellow teachers during the end-term examination period. This hands-on involvement not only allowed me to contribute to the school community but also provided a holistic understanding of the various facets of the educational process.
In these initial phases of the practicum, each day has been marked by a rich tapestry of learning, planning, and active participation in the educational ecosystem. The condensed timeframe has not diminished the depth of experiences and insights gained, highlighting the intensity and significance of this practicum journey. As I navigate through the remaining days, I am poised to further integrate these experiences into my evolving understanding of effective teaching and learning practices.
Having completed this program, I've gained valuable insights, and my initial reasons for joining have been fulfilled. It has given me a sense of purpose, motivating me to pursue a career in teaching. I now feel more confident in my teaching abilities and have become more socially engaged. Notably, there has been an improvement in both my English speaking skills and teaching strategies. Furthermore, Witnessing students attentively listening and actively participating in discussions brings me fulfillment, knowing that I've imparted useful knowledge to them.

OUTCOMES
OF THE PRACTICUM
CHALLENGES
OF THE PRACTICUM
-
I encounter several challenges in my teaching practice, particularly the language barrier, a common issue when working abroad. As a Filipino pre-service English teacher, I initially felt confident in my ability to communicate effectively since I am at an intermediate level in English speaking. However, I discovered that some students struggle with English fluency as their first language is Bahasa Indonesia.
-
Additionally, adapting my pedagogical approach and teaching strategies has been challenging due to differences in the educational methods used by both students and teachers. I've had to make significant adjustments to ensure effective communication and understanding.
-
Dealing with students' behavior and misconduct has presented another challenge. In the Philippines, maintaining composure while disciplining students is crucial. However, in teaching at SHP, I find myself contemplating whether to address certain behaviors, considering the cultural differences between Indonesia and the Philippines. This cultural distinction adds an extra layer of complexity to maintaining discipline in the classroom.

OVERALL
IMPRESSION
The SEA Teachers Program serves as a powerful instrument, offering participants a unique lens through which to perceive education from a global perspective. It becomes a gateway to recognizing and embracing the rich tapestry of differences that exist in the realm of teaching. In this transformative program, diversity is not seen as a problem but as an invaluable asset that enriches the educational experience.
By engaging with educators from various countries, each bringing their unique teaching philosophies, methodologies, and cultural nuances, participants are exposed to a vibrant mosaic of pedagogical approaches. These differences become opportunities for mutual learning, fostering an environment where educators can exchange ideas, share best practices, and collaboratively contribute to the evolution of education on a global scale.
From the depths of my heart, I just want to shout out how incredibly happy I am to have had the chance to be a part of the SEA Teachers Program! This journey has been an absolute blast, and I've soaked up so much knowledge and experiences along the way. It's not just about becoming a better educator; it's also about making some awesome friends in the process. Grateful for this fantastic opportunity!
SUGGESTIONS
FOR FUTURE IMPROVEMENT
The SEA Teachers Program, initiated in 2015, has consistently evolved and improved with each passing year. Its success can be attributed to meticulous planning and ongoing research, ensuring that the program remains well-structured and continues to meet its objectives effectively. However, I only have one (1) suggestion for future improvement which is extending the time frame of the SEA Teachers Program is a suggestion that holds merit. A longer duration for the program could indeed provide participants with a more comprehensive and immersive experience, allowing for a deeper development of skills and capabilities. This extension could potentially enhance the overall impact of the program on participants' professional growth and contribute to a more thorough understanding of the teaching environment.
